Scientific cow-based farming

Objective of this project: To educate farmers about the hazards of chemical fertilisers and toxic chemical pesticides, which are harmful to the environment and human life, and thus increase farming costs. This project’s goal is to encourage farmers to use eco-friendly, natural, and scientific cow-based farming instead of hazardous chemicals, and to guide them one-on-one on their farms.

The success of the project at a glance

The project is being implemented with the support of Cummins India Foundation in three villages of the Ahmednagar district. Participating farmers have saved up to 90% on their crop expenses. Farmers’ incomer per acre has increased, also Crops need less water. The texture and quality of the soil have improved. Soil organic matter, nutrient content has increased. Earthworms have grown in the soil. Now farmers can see on their fields a variety of birds, butterflies, honeybees.

Scientific cow based farming: the need of the hour

Large quantities of chemical fertilizers are being used for agriculture and pesticides are being sprayed. As a result, the land is becoming barren and the salinity of agricultural land is increasing. The need for water for agriculture has also increased significantly. Due to unrealistic, uncontrolled spraying of pesticides, the resistance of various pests is increasing. Therefore, more and more high doses of pesticide spraying is required to control crop diseases. The big downside of all this is that we all have to eat food that contains a large amount of harmful and toxic chemicals. This has led to an increase in the number of serious illnesses. If such unrestricted use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides continues, the environment and all living things will face a major crisis in the near future.

There is another dark side to this problem. The increasing cost of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is beyond the reach of farmers nowadays. Due to the deteriorating soil health and the growing water demand of crops has made the average farmer very tired. At present, he cannot afford farming. As a result, the farmer is always in a financial crisis. This has seriously affected the health of the family and the education of the children. These reasons are the rising number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra.

The only solution to all these problems is to abandon the chemical farming method and start with scientific cow-based farming to save the environment and the ecosystem. Scientific cow-based farming does not use any form of toxic chemicals but uses cow urine (Gomutra), cow dung and various ayurvedic plant extracts, extracts and powders. Improving soil health reduces water requirement for a crop.

The benefits of scientific cow-based farming

Personal benefits for farmers:

1: For scientific cow-based farming, farmers have to use cow dung, cow urine etc. available at home. Farmers do not have to buy chemical fertilizers and pesticides from the market. Therefore, farmers have proved through our project that they save about 90% of the cost of the crop.

2: The yield per acre is also higher than that of chemical farming. It has also been proved that the production of farmers has increased using this technique which has been started in three villages.

3: Increases the natural immunity of the crop to fight diseases and pests. Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated in the field of scientific cow-based farming. Cow-based pesticides are used to control the outbreak.

4: Scientific cow-based farming improves soil health. The number of earthworms in the soil increases greatly. Therefore, vermicompost is naturally available to the crop in the fields themselves.

5: Non-toxic and nutritious agricultural produce. Such products can fetch good prices in the village and in the market.

6; The high risk of poisoning during the handling and spraying of chemical pesticides is completely avoided in scientific cow-based farming techniques.

Village Benefits:
1: Farmers in the village will be self-sufficient. Improving the living standards of the farmers in the village will make the village known as “progressive/ experimental”.
2: The money will remain in the village itself.
3: Due to nature-friendly farming, the environment will remain clean, unpolluted.
4: Eating non-toxic food will improve productivity.
6: Spending on illness will be reduced.

Benefits to the nation:

1: The cost of importing fertilizers will be reduced/ eliminated.

2: Good quality and nutritious food grains will be available in the country

3: Efficient, healthy, enthusiastic and capable more quality manpower will be created

4: The country’s health expenditure will be saved.

5: Pollution of land, air and water will be greatly reduced

6: Expenses incurred on various loans and subsidies will be saved

7: The country will be self-sufficient in many products

Project implementation

The project is being implemented jointly by ‘Thum Creative Pravara Dakshata Kriti Manch’ in association with the ‘Cummins India Foundation’ in three villages namely Daithane Gunjal and Panoli (Tq: Parner, District: Ahmednagar) and Devgaon (Tal. Ahmednagar) since June 2021.

Experienced Consultant & Trainer

Mr Rajendra Sambre (BSc Agri.) Is working as a consultant and guide for this project on behalf of Thum Creative Paryavaran Dakshata Kruti Munch. He held meetings of farmer groups at the beginning of the project. He explained the dangers and disadvantages of chemical farming to the farmers. In comparison, ‘Scientific Cow Based Farming’ is an integral part of the environment as it complements the environment, interacting with farmers on how to reduce the total cost of farming and how to make agriculture profitable.

In the next phase, Mr Rajendra Sambare went to the farmer’s fields and provided personal guidance, based on soil and water test. He visits these villages and farmers on a monthly and as and when required basis and guides farmers. He and Thum Creative’s Co-Ordinator are in constant touch with the farmers through WhatsApp messages, groups, phone calls, video calls etc.

Success stories of the project

I am Rajendra Gunjal from Daithane Gunjal. Scientific cow-based farming has saved 90% of the cost of onion crop. The quality of the crop was good. Fenugreek crop was obtained earlier than chemical farming. Overall, my experience is that scientific cow based farming is beneficial.

I am Bharat Shinde from Devgaon. I have grown wheat by scientific cow-based farming. I did not have to spend on cow-based farming as I used only household items. Timely spraying of cow urine did not cause any disease. This farming method has benefited me

I am Vishal Yeole from Daithane Gunjal. As fodder for animals, I have grown Lasun Grass by scientific cow-based farming. We are getting better results than before. Annual expenditure on Lasun Grass has been reduced by Rs. 10 to 15 thousand. Income has increased.
