Provide scientific training and low-cost practical guidance to farmers about profitable dairy production and cattle health management by visiting their fields/ animal shade (Gotha).
The project is being implemented in three villages namely Daithane Gunjal and Panoli (Tal. Parner, Dist. Ahmednagar) and Devgaon (Tal. Ahmednagar) in collaboration with Cummins India Foundation. Milk production of participating farmers has increased by 1 to 4 litres / per animal, fat content also increased, the average expenditure on animal care is also reduced at large. Hence average Financial income has increased from Rs 2,000/- to Rs 10,000/- per farmer/ per month. The health of the animals has improved so the cost of treatment has come down. Farmers are started recognizing common and deadly animal diseases at an early stage. Farmers’ labour cost has been reduced due to a reduction in the incidence of animal diseases.
By ancient times there is a deep relationship between farmers and animals. Agriculture in India cannot be imagined without the use of animals. Most of the farmers are engaged in the milk business as a side business with agriculture. But the general picture is that it lacks a professional and scientific approach. The important need of today is to train the farmers and provide appropriate knowledge about balanced nutrition, care, diseases and treatment of dairy animals. It is also important to inform them of small, low-cost home remedies on diseases to run the dairy business for-profit and to maintain animal health. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case at present. To give a simple example, the problem of Mastitis is responsible for 70% of the expenditure on animals across the country. About Rs, 7,000 crore is spent every year in India for the treatment of this disease. However, it can be prevented in time to prevent the disease. Many such big and small issues have a direct impact on the dairy business and ruin the economy of the farmers. The project has been undertaken by Thum Creative Paryavaran Dakshata Kruti Munch in collaboration with Cummins India Foundation to provide scientific training to dairy farmers and make the business profitable.
On behalf of Thum Creative Paryavarn Dakshata Kruti Munch, Dr. Prashant Yogi (MVSC. DBM. PGT, Israel) is guiding the farmers as an expert trainer. He is an expert in ‘Milk Production for Export’ as well as ‘Animal Productivity’ with over 30 years of experience. At the beginning of the training program, they held meetings of livestock farmers in the three villages. He convinced the participating farmers that only keeping animals and feeding them is not a dairy business. Guided all farmers about animal balanced diet, vaccination, health records, disease management as well as how the animal should be treated. After that he has gone to the farmers cowshed and inspected the animals, suggested the treatment for the health problem they had.
The project is being implemented in three villages namely Daithane Gunjal and Panoli (Tal. Parner, Dist. Ahmednagar) and Devgaon (Tal. Ahmednagar) in collaboration with Cummins India Foundation. The duration of this project was from June 2021 to May 2022. This project was planned for the farmers of the entire village. Collective training classes are being organized every two months for the farmers in the village. Also, cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep are being inspected and health checks are being carried out at every farmer’s house and cowshed.
During the survey, it was found that most of the farmer’s livestock had some minor to moderate health problems. But most of the farmers are ignorant about this. Animal health problems are harming milk production and milk quality. Every farmer had a different problem. They were told the proper treatment. They have been trained to do dairy farming scientifically.
The training covered animal feeding, hoofing, vaccination of animals, eradication of worms and prevention of worms, identification of symptoms of animal diseases and natural remedies for them at an early stage. The activists of Thum Creative were coordinating with the farmers to solve the problems faced by the farmers participating in the project from time to time. The farmers were convinced that the measures suggested by the project would reduce their costs and increase production. So the farmers voluntarily took the simple measures suggested by the trainers. This led to a significant increase in their milk production in a short time. Animal health and diet improved. Seeing this, the farmers who were not initially involved in the project also voluntarily joined later.
The expert trainers of the project visit personally to these villages and farmers every month to guide them. They are in constant touch with the farmers through WhatsApp messages, WhatsApp groups, phone calls, video calls.
